Buffalo, New York —Lake effect snow has come early to parts of Western New York prompting a State of Emergency and a flood watch to be issued, especially in Buffalo, New York and its suburbs where nearly 2 feet of snow fell during the afternoon and last night. Snow started to fall at around 12:00 pm EST on Thursday, October 12, heavy at times, and accompanied by thunder and lightning. Forecasters called the weather event “unprecedented.” A driving ban has been issued for Tonawanda, New York, Buffalo and Amherst where at least “80% of roads in Amherst are impassible.” The Buffalo Niagara International Airport opened at almost 3:30 p.m. [EST]. The New York State Throughway, or interstate 90 is closed from nearly Rochester, New York to Dunkirk, New York which is nearly 110 miles long. Motorists at the Williamsville, New York toll barrier are being turned around. A driving ban remains in effect while a state of emergency exists.

Water will be shut off in 24 hours due to the lack of electricity to water pumps in the area and in a press conference, Mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown issued a “boil water advisory.” Brown also said that “70,000 of the 75,000 residents and businesses in Amherst are still without power.” Residents are asked to bottle water and prepare for the outage. It is not known when water will be turned back on. At least 30 water intake pumps in Erie County, out of the 50 the county has, have no power. Officials say that businesses and residents could be out of water by 5:00 p.m. [EST].

At least 3 people have been killed due to the storm. Two of those people were killed in a two-car accident in Lancaster, New York, and the other person was in Niagara County and died after being hit by a vehicle. One person was crushed and killed by a falling tree in Amherst, while in the process of removing snow from his property.

Hundreds of trees have snapped in half as the snow began to fall around the city. Many trees, which still have their leaves, have broken into pieces as the heavy, wet snow began to pile up, as much as an inch an hour. Early on Thursday, the airport had received nearly 9 inches (23cm) of snow and climbing. The storm has caused many delays and cancellations in flights leaving from or going to Buffalo.

Nearly 400,000 people in Buffalo and surrounding suburbs are still without power and forecasters at the NOAA are warning people “not to go outside in an area where heavy snow has fallen unless absolutely necessary.” Power may not be restored to the affected areas until Sunday and possibly next week in some areas. Damage to trees is extensive with nearly every tree destroyed on Granger Place in Buffalo.

“This was extremely heavy snow and most of the trees still have most of their leaves … we can’t do a complete damage assessment until the snow stops falling,” said spokesman for Niagara Mohawk, Western New York’s area power company, Steve Brady.

“At 8 pm [on Thursday], utility companies were reporting over 50,000 customers without power. The reason for the widespread power outages has been the combination of very heavy water laden snow accumulating on the trees that still have most of their leaves. Tree’s limbs break under the weight of the snow and bring down power lines as they fall,” said a statement on NOAA’s website.

“[This is the] snowiest day in 137 years [of weather records]. Six inches of snow occurred on October 13, 1909 and again on October 31, 1917,” added the NOAA weather statement.

Many business and nearly every school in Western New York are still closed due to the weather and the snow is forecasted to move south again over the Buffalo Metropolitan area, but snow amounts are not expected to be significant. Wind is expected to be strong and gusty which could bring down tree limbs which are broken but still attached to the tree. Some areas could se an additional 6 inches of snow by Saturday morning.

The flood watch takes effect at 2:00 p.m. [EST] and continues through Saturday.

The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), the regulator of the electricity and gas markets in Great Britain, has launched an investigation into four of the largest British energy suppliers over suspicions that they not be complying with face-to-face and telephone sales regulations. The four organisations facing scrutiny could be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover if it is found that they are breaking sales regulations. Scottish Power, npower, Scottish and Southern Energy and EDF Energy are all to face questioning by the organisation.

Ofgem has urged customers of the four companies to alert the energy regulator, “if they are concerned about the sales approach any domestic suppliers have taken when selling energy contracts, either face-to-face or by telephone,” according to a statement. “As part of the investigation process Ofgem will examine any evidence of non-compliance and consider whether there are grounds for exercising enforcement powers.”

New regulations on sales tactics by energy suppliers were recently introduced, and, Ofgem has said, energy suppliers must be “proactive in preventing misselling to customers both face to face and over the phone. Also, if suppliers are selling contracts face to face they must provide customers with an estimate before any sales are concluded. In most circumstances customers should also receive a comparison of the supplier’s offer with their current deal.” Only one in five consumers consider energy suppliers to be trustworthy, and 61% of people feel intimidated by doorstep sales people from energy companies. According to the organisation Consumer Focus, “complaints have declined since new rules came into effect this year, but suppliers still seem to be flouting the rules. Some customers are still being given misleading quotes and information, which leave them worse off when they switch provider.”

The newspaper The Guardian has reported that “householders are reporting that sales agents working for the energy suppliers are giving them misleading information and quotes which leave them worse off when they switch supplier.” Consumer Focus has said that if energy companies continue to break the rules, they could be banned from doorstep-selling completely. The report goes on to say that “new figures from helpline Consumer Direct show that while the number of complaints has fallen since last year, about 200 cases of mis-selling are being reported each month.” However, Scottish Power said it insists on “the highest standards possible for all of our sales agents”, and npower told the Financial Times that it was “confident that the processes we have in place mean that we comply with our regulatory obligations”. EDF added that it was “fully compliant with all obligations regarding sales of energy contracts”.

According to the regulator, the obligations are serious and must be followed by energy supplies, or they will face “tougher sanctions than those available under more general consumer protection law.” Ofgem has published a guide advising consumers what they should do should an energy salesperson contact them in person of by telephone. Improper sales tactics are still common in the industry—in 2008 an Ofgem investigation found that 48% of gas customers and 42% of electricity customers were worse off after switching supplier on the doorstep. Npower was fined £1.8 million in 2008 by the organisation, and Ofgem insists that they are “committed to taking action” over improper sales activities by energy companies. “Suppliers have existing obligations to detect and prevent misselling and new licence conditions were brought in following our probe to further increase protection for customers,” said Andrew Wright, a Senior Partner of the regulator. “We expect all suppliers to comply with these tougher obligations but if our investigations find otherwise we will take strong action.”

Head of energy at Consumer Focus, Audrey Gallacher, called the investigation “a welcome step … to address years of customers getting a bad deal on energy prices on their doorstep. While many doorstep sales people will do a good job, the pay and rewards system continues to encourage mis-selling, despite years of regulation and voluntary initiatives. If better advice for customers and enforcement of the tougher rules doesn’t end the flagrant abuse of this form of selling the big question will be whether it should be completely banned.” Christine McGourty, director of Energy UK, which represents the leading gas and electricity companies, said that “the companies involved will collaborate with the Ofgem investigation and are awaiting further details from the regulator. Any sales agent in breach of the code will be struck off the approved energy sales register.” Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, has said he considers the situation “shocking”, saying that the investigation “will do nothing to improve consumer trust in energy suppliers. We’re pleased that Ofgem has promised tough measures against any firms guilty of mis-selling. We hope it uses this opportunity to tighten rules around telesales so they are in line with those for face to face sales.”

SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson Mike Weir MP, however, said that the investigation “does nothing to tackle the real problem of fuel prices which leave many Scots facing great difficulty in heating their homes … Rather than tinkering around the edges Ofgem should be looking at how to reduce prices for vulnerable households.” Gareth Kloet, Head of Utilities at Confused.com, one of the UK’s biggest and most popular price comparison services, also welcomed the inquiry. “It is unacceptable for energy companies to mislead customers like this,” he said, adding that Confused.com has previously “urged energy providers to either stop the practice of doorstep selling or make it very clear to households that better deals are available online. There is no reason why door-to-door salesmen can’t show people online deals and even help households switch to them.”

“Our research reveals customers could end up paying £167 more than they need to as door-to-door salesmen are unable to offer the discounts that are applied online. The changes that have been made to date are a welcome addition to safeguard customers; however this review has been much needed for a long time. Hopefully it will mark the end of customers being overcharged and missold,” Kloet continued. “Our message to energy consumers remains the same: they should shop around online to make sure they’re getting the best deal possible and turn these salesmen away.”

The Traveling Orator: Todd Newton’s Tips For Speaking On The Road

by

Todd Newton

Let’s compare calenders. I don’t mean let’s look and see who has booked the most presentations or who speaks at the biggest venues. I’m just curious as to how many speeches or talks you’ve given in your hometown in the last, let’s say…ever.

For me the answer is one. The simple truth is that, in order to make a living as a professional speaker, our suitcases never really get unpacked. Like me, I’m sure you saw the wonderful 2009 George Clooney film Up In The Air and thought to yourself “This is my life story.” All of the cards from various reward programs, the strategies for passing through airport security quickly and effectively and the countless presentations given in small hotel (or motel) banquet rooms struck a chord in every seasoned presenter. Life on the road is a fact of life for many and I am going to share with you some ways to make it more comfortable. If you have reached the status of one who can afford a tour bus or your own private plane then stop reading right now. I am not on your level and continuing on would be a waste of your high dollar time. But if you aren’t there quite yet then these words are for you. Since 2001, I have averaged over two hundred days a year away from home. Now, if I were a twenty three year old rock star this would mean that I am living the dream. However, I can’t sing, nor can I strum a guitar and I sure as hell am not twenty three. Instead, I am a forty year old single father of two. Those of you that know me well are fully aware of the fact that there is nothing more important to me than my role as Dad. When my first child was born in 2001, I quickly realized that time away was inevitable and, therefore, I need to find a way to make it as efficient as possible. By efficient I mean I needed to make the most money in the least amount of time. Not an alien concept to my fellow achievers out there. Before I share my secrets for making the most of your time away from home, let me say that I am happily un-married to one of the greatest women who ever walked the face of the earth. My ex-wife and I work in near perfect harmony as co-parents and share the same ultimate vision of raising our children to be happy and productive people. Without her support and understanding of my career over the years there is no way I could have emotionally handled getting on even a single flight and our lifestyle would have certainly suffered. To the best of her ability, she works with my schedule so that my quality time with my angels is almost uninterrupted. I am grateful to her for all that she does. My children are lucky to call her Mommy. I never set out to be a “road dog.” It was never in my life plan to visit every motor inn and diner that small town America has to offer or view the Grand Canyon from the ever shrinking coach class airline seats that I frequently inhabit (I just saw it for the first time in person last year). But I’d be lying if I said it has been all bad. I’ve also dined at the world’s finest restaurants, flown First Class across several oceans, enjoyed the amenities of the award winning resorts and met some of the world’s most fascinating individuals. If you do it right, business travel can actually be,,,dare I say it,,,FUN. 1) Pencil vs. Pen. I was recently in Cairo, Egypt and had the opportunity to sit on a discussion panel with other leaders in the field of personal development. An audience member raised his hand as asked me specifically how I managed to juggle two television shows, a radio show, my speaking engagements and my coaching schedule. I have been asked this many times so my answer was all locked and loaded. In January of 2007 I was in Nashville, TN training with Al Gore to be one of his selected presenters of An Inconvenient Truth. One evening, after hours of studying slides, listening to his scientific advisors and working with a speaking coach, Mr. Gore and his then wife, Tipper, took a few of us to dinner. Just after we had all placed our orders, Mr. Gore went to the bar to get a drink. Never one to miss an opportunity, I joined him and asked if I could trouble him for a piece of advice. Al Gore is the only man I know of who travels more than I do and his devotion to his family is legendary. I simply asked him “How to balance it all?” His answer literally changed my life and I am thrilled to pass it on to you. In that authoritative southern tone he said “Todd, it’s easier than you believe it to be. In your daily planner you write things like birthdays, recitals and first days of school in pen. Everything else gets written in pencil. Period. Stick to that.” I have stuck to it and it has changed my view on business travel completely and if people don’t respect it then they are not people I choose to do business with. I am proud to say that I have never missed an important family event. Not to say that I make every single soccer game but I am there for the majority of them and just yesterday, though only off from a Las Vegas engagement for less than forty eight hours, I was banging on the glass as my son made his goaltending debut in a little league hockey game here in New England. He was also named the game’s MVP. That has nothing to do with this article- that’s just me being a proud father. Schedule the important things first and you will feel more comfortable when it comes time to leave. 2) Convenience. It may cost a little more but your comfort plays a major role in your performance. I subscribe to the “last flight in, first flight out” mentality. This allows me to spend as much time at home as possible and, over the course of years, a few hours here and there turn into added days with those you love. This schedule does not always allow me to get the cheapest airfare but it is here where you must decide how much your time is really worth. Do I want to take my kids to the bus stop before I leave on a four day trip or do I want to save $30 on my plane ticket? That’s a no brainer, isn’t it? I am also a big fan of car services. There is nothing like stepping off a redeye flight at 6:30am and seeing a driver holding a sign with your name on it. Compare that feeling to having to stand outside and wait for a shuttle, get driven to the long term parking lot where you’re paying an average of $11 a night, dig your keys out of your bag and drive all the way home and you will soon realize that is well worth the (tax deductible) cost. Many car services offer door to door airport runs for around $65. When it comes to hotel accommodations my advice is to live a little! If, for some reason, your room and travel are not included in your agreement, remember what I have said in previous articles…you get what you pay for. Motels that advertise $39/night are not meant for professionals like you. You are a speaker who needs to be at your best. Your client and your audience expect you to be well rested and prepared. How can you possibly be at your best after tossing and turning on a disgusting, hard mattress all night? How can you appear presentable when your shower runs out of hot water after a minute and a half? I’ve been there. You can avoid all of this by simply spending a little more to stay in a nice place. You will be amazed at the difference paying an additional $40 (again, tax deductible) can make. Most mid luxury hotel chains offer comfortable rooms, fitness centers, wi-fi and laundry services for prices that will not destroy your travel budget. My team at Todd Newton Life Strategies, LLC utilizes http://www.hotels.com and http://www.orbitz.com for the majority of our travel booking. 3) Reward Programs. No offense, but if its good enough for George Clooney its good enough for us. Remember the scene in Up In The Air where Clooney’s character, Ryan Bingham, meets the pretty redheaded woman in the hotel bar and they instantly connect by comparing their collections of cards for award programs? They’re smart! Hotels, airlines and rental car agencies are very well aware that people like us exist and they will go to great lengths to get our business. Some of the best that I’ve found and use regularly are the Delta Skymiles Program (http://www.delta.com), Southwest Rapid Rewards (http://www.southwest.com) and Hilton Honors (http://www.hhonors.com). All three are free to join and offer valuable, easy to achieve incentives such as automatic upgrades, complimentary nights and priority check-in. My two main airports are Boston Logan and LAX and I cannot tell you how many times the priority check in line has saved me from almost missing a flight. Not that I ever run late, but unanticipated factors such as traffic and weather can sometimes throw even the best laid plans for a loop. Just about every company has their own program so I certainly encourage you to sign up for all of them and find the one that best suits your wants and needs. Soon, by showing a little loyalty, you will begin to enjoy the benefits such as saving money by paying for an upcoming flight with miles. Again, these “little things” add up over time. Become a member of as many as possible and you will see yourself beginning to gravitate to just a few. Business travel is a double edge sword. On one hand, we get to see and do some pretty amazing things on someone else’s dime. On the other hand, we see and do those things alone and are left to only bring home overpriced souvenirs from airport gift shops to enhance the stories we tell our children. In this day and age, travel is unavoidable if we are to rise to the top of our field. No one knows this more than today’s professional speaker. Whether we present to motivate, educate or entertain our audiences do not come to us-we always go to them. By putting the important things in your life first you can travel with the piece of mind that comes from knowing that your priorities are in order. By spending a few extra dollars you give yourself the comfort that makes your time away more bearable. Remember, you deserve it. Finally, by simply allowing the big travel corporations to show their gratitude, you feel a sense of appreciation and get your fair share of the finer things in life. Affordable luxury is out there if you just take the time to look for it. Many people don’t know this but I am pretty much tattooed from shoulder to elbow on both arms. One of my first tattoos, and probably my favorite, is a banner which reads Home Sweet Home. I think that pretty much says it all. Now, from seat 12F (window) on the 2:40pm to Milwaukee, I raise my incredibly overpriced drink off of this undersized tray table in a toast. Here’s to your safe travel and may you meet plenty of pretty redheads in the hotel bar’assuming you’re single. Todd Newton is a popular television personality and international keynote speaker. Areas in far north Queensland remain without electricity, running water or sewerage after Category 5 Cyclone Larry hit the coast on Monday morning. Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has declared a state of emergency in Innisfail and says he is worried about the outbreak of diseases. Army engineers are among more than 1,000 people assisting in Queensland’s cyclone relief effort.

Premier Beattie says it could be more than a week before power is restored in Innisfail. “The whole bloody place is blown apart… this is going to be a long, slow recovery,” he said.

Larry caused widespread damage as it crossed the coast south of Cairns, with winds of up to 290km/h (180 mph). Thousands of buildings were damaged and most of the Australia’s banana crop has been destroyed. Thousands of kilometres of power lines were brought down. Many key roads are flooded.

State Emergency Service volunteers are putting tarpaulins on damaged homes. “Some homes will need complete rebuilding and that will take many months. But right now let’s get the bandaids out and get people settled as much as we can and then start the serious rebuilding of the Innisfail area.” said Kathryn Ryan, from the Disaster Management Group

Hospitals are unable to cope with the lack of clean running water and reliable power supplies. There are concerns about outbreaks of dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases. “Our main concern is with the quality of the drinking water, the quality of people’s food supplies and any health risks from inundation by water,” a health spokesman said.

Queensland Health Minister Jim Guthrie says there is no electricity in Innisfail, the hardest hit town in Cyclone Larry’s path. “It’s just too difficult to keep the hospital operating,” he said. “There’s no mains power but they’re also having trouble with generators – there’s a lack of fuel.”

The region’s banana, sugar cane and avocado farm industries will need rebuilding. Jan Davis, of fruit growers’ group Growcom, says Cyclone Larry will have widespread effects on the fruit industry.

Among supplies flowing in were nearly 10,500 gallons of water and 6,000 in-flight meals provided by Qantas. Troops also set up a water purification unit, and health authorities warned residents to boil their water. “There most certainly would be around 7,000 people … that are effectively homeless,” Federal Minister Bob Katter told The Associated Press. “They’re sitting in four walls but no roof.” Some 17,000 homes were blacked out in Cairns.

Ergon Energy Regional services manager Geoff Bowes says generators have been sent to Innisfail to provide power for sewerage works and some supermarkets and extra staff have been flown in from Brisbane and Townsville. “Nothing could prepare us for this,” he said.

The Australian reports that building industry and government sources have estimated the cost of Larry as “one of Australia’s most costly natural disasters, with a damage bill expected to exceed $1.5 billion.”

So far there have been no deaths or major injuries reported. Forecasters have warned of more wild weather for Queensland, with a second cyclone expected to approach the coast later this week. The Bureau of Meteorology say Tropical Cyclone Wati is moving towards the west-northwest at 13 km per hour and should gradually intensify over the next 24 hours.

You may have heard that Philips Lighting is the leader in digital projection lighting, but do you know why? It is simple economics: Philips has spent millions in R&D to produce the best lamps and ballasts for your projection television. There is no real competition.

Because stable and sustained lamp operation is crucial in projection applications such as DLP, LCD projection, and front projection systems, Philips UHP lamps are designed in combination with the ignition system, in close cooperation with television and projection manufacturers. This process enables coordinated lamp and driver development and results in extremely innovative and reliable lighting solutions.

When purchasing a replacement lamp product for your television, there are many things to consider such as cost, color, clarity, reliability, longevity, and luminance. With a Philips lamp, you got the best performance for your buck.

The costs are coming down on these products. A new Philips E23h type lamp would have cost $200.00 USD just three years ago. Today, we find the Philips E23h as low as $129.99 USD. Cost isnt as much of an issue these days since all lamp retailers have driven the prices down. What really matters when youre looking at cost is the actual sellers customer service and technical support. If a company isnt able to provide some sort of technical support, then they arent doing you a service by selling you a lamp since support usually comes from another third-party dealer like a repair shop.

Aside from costs, color and clarity come into play. As UHP lamps are used primarily as a light source, the color and clarity is controlled by the light engine system. That doesnt mean, however, that the light color isnt important. You need sustained white light, as bright as the sun. With the mercury vapor lamps made by Philips, theres maximum efficiency and brilliant color associated with your television pictureand for good reason. Their lamp design may look simple, but the chemical makeup and engineering of the lighting element inside the lamp is extremely important. Only the right chemical mixture will produce this vibrant light that will give your television or projector the best possible picture.

Reliability, longevity, and luminance go hand-in-hand. The more reliable the lamp, the longer it will last. And typically, the more reliable and longer lasting the lamp is, the brighter it stays. A Philips brand lamp is made with reliability and sustainability in mind. From day one, youll have the brightest picture until the day it starts to die. This is usually about 7,000 hours or more, making Philips the gold-standard when it comes to digital projection lighting.

Compared with generic makers of the lamp, Philips has them beat. Philips Lighting manufacturers their lighting elements in Europe and ships them for assembly with the bell-shaped reflectors in China. This has given rise to the number of copy lamps out there, and even cheap forgeries, so knowing your supplier is crucial. Only authorized Philips distributors should be trusted.

These days, there are tons of copy lamps, generic manufacturers, and third-parties that almost comes close to the quality of the Philips lamp, but in most cases, Philips is still the best brand on the market, and will continue to be. They are a leader in home theater lighting, digital projection lighting, and energy saving lamps. Their process and design is unmatched.

When looking to purchase digital projection lighting, look no further because Philips is the brand of choice for manufacturers. Trust the brand that invented the technology and continues to pour money into research and development of newer, better, more environmentally sound products like UHP lamps.

Six energy companies in the United Kingdom have announced that it is likely that the prices for energy bills could increase over the course of 2010.

The companies, which are nicknamed the “big six” in the United Kingdom, did not pass on information that there would be price cuts in energy bills despite increasing profits. However, the companies have in fact sent a message in response saying that the prices of bills may even increase over the course of the next year. Energy company watchdog the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) have estimated that energy companies will make gross margins of £170 ($276) per dual fual customer over the course of the next twelve months, due to the recent fall in wholesale energy costs.

Ofgem have said: “Our analysis shows that based on an 18-month hedging strategy and assuming that retail prices remain unchanged, projected gross margin is set to increase by around £80 for dual fuel customers over the next six months.”

The “big six” energy companies in the United Kingdom are British Gas, E-on, Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy, Scottish Power, and EDF Energy. British Gas stated: “Prices [are] likely to remain at historically high levels, and in fact likely to increase as non-commodity costs rise ever upwards.”

EDF Energy said: “[We] would of course be prepared to reduce tariffs if market conditions allowed.” Scottish Power stated: “There are no immediate signals that would indicate a fall in retail prices for this winter, and risks of an increase next year.” Scottish & Southern Energy commented: “With forward annual wholesale prices significantly higher, and with upward pressures in terms of distribution, environmental and social costs, seeking to avoid an increase between now and the end of 2010 is an important goal.”

Meanwhile, a study by Consumer Focus in early September 2009 suggested that “energy companies were overcharging customers by £100 ($162) every year. A spokesperson for Ofgem said that there was no evidence of any cartel in operation, or evidence of profiteering. The spokesperson commented: “It is up to the companies themselves to decide whether to cut their bills. Consumer Focus data suggests that Scottish Power has increased dual fuel prices by the most since 2003 – up 148% – while decreasing prices by 0.6% so far this year. RWE’s Npower has increased tariffs by 132% since 2003, but has reduced bills by 2.7% in 2009.”

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Working in the medical sphere is a difficult and exacting job, and also one of the most valued occupations that a person can be employed in. Often, you will have to keep calm and carry on when most around you are not doing so. It may be that you then go home and are ready to cry or so exhausted that you fall right asleep, but when on the job you need to be strong.

Without a doubt, we all expect higher standards from health-care workers than we would expect from most other occupations. Simply put, if you do not maintain those standards, people will be worried, with some justification. Although standards are always important, this is never truer than when you have a part to play in someone’s continuing life and good health.

Whatever your job within the sector, people will look to you to live up to these exacting standards, and this is because the people for whom you are working are often recovering from a health scare which is putting them through hell. They don’t need any more worries, their sole focus must be to keep recovering until they can get a clean bill of health.

This kind of pressure can make any job tough, but it should also fortify you to know that you have been chosen to do this job by people who know you can do it. In that light, the best thing to do is simply get on with it. When you are on the job, there is not really any time to think about how overwhelming the job can be.

It seems bizarre to a lot of people that a patient might judge the efficiency of a doctor or nurse by the cut of their nursing scrubs uniforms, but it is actually understandable. You are looking after them, so you should be able to look after yourself. They are usually not in the best position to do it for themselves, regrettably.

After all, if you were getting over a serious illness and noticed that the person providing your front line care had a large rip or a noticeable stain on their scrub pants, would you feel reassured in your recovery? Most people would not, and it is easy to see their point of view when you really think about it.

Finding the best medical clothing at the most reasonable cost is, without a doubt, vitally important. Fancy scrub tops are not the issue, it is merely that the person wearing the top gives an impression of being trustworthy and in control. Even if in your mind you are nervous, exhausted and even a little scared, on the outside you need to be authoritative.

As long as your scrub jackets and other parts of your outfit are in decent shape, the patient will have more of a sense that you will ensure their comfortable recovery. This may sound like a crazy thing to say, but your job is not just about knowing medical procedure, it has a lot to do with presentation as well.

High winds and heavy rains have left 4 people dead, and much of the Seattle, Washington area is without electrical power. A number of large trees have been downed and heavy rains have caused minor flooding in many areas of the city. According to first-hand reports as many as 1 million people and several large organizations such as Microsoft are without power this morning.

Flood, storm, and strong wind watches were in effect last night as a rare thunderstorm system moved into the Pacific Northwest region, hitting areas from Seattle to Portland with high winds and heavy rains. Interstate 5 through Seattle was closed at its intersection with Mercer Street due to standing water. The State Route 520 floating bridge, a major conduit across Lake Washington to the technology-rich Eastside was closed and its drawspan opened to protect it from storm damage well into Friday. Local roads throughout the region were strewn with debris, especially evergreen branches and leaves. Authorities advised people to stay off the roads.

Four deaths were reported in connection with the storm as of Friday. A Seattle woman died in the basement of her home after floodwaters caused the basement door to close and jam shut. Two others died in outlying areas after tall Northwest evergreens fell on their vehicles, and a man in Grays Harbor, near the Pacific coast, died in his sleep after a tree fell on his mobile home. KOMO news reported a caller saying a 100-foot evergreen had fallen into his house.

Downed trees and high winds also brought down powerlines throughout Western Washington. Seattle City Light, the municipal electric utility for the city, reported a peak of 175,000 customers without power, most in the north and south ends of the city, as well as the east edge of town and the Green Lake area.

Puget Sound Energy, the electric utility for much of the Seattle metro area, reported 700,000 customers (over 66%) without power, with the area around Seattle the worst hit. PSE, which had already enlisted additional powerline workers from neighboring states, did not send crews out until mid Friday morning due to continued high winds. Estimates for power restoration were anywhere from a few days to over a week. Island County, at the mouth of Puget Sound, was completely without power.

Schools in Seattle and throughout its suburbs were closed Friday, many due to power outages. The city of Mercer Island, connected to the mainland only by Interstate 90, is reportedly inaccessible.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer failed to print due to power failures at the printing facility, which had redundant power feeds from both the Seattle utility as well as PSE. It is the first time in 70 years that the paper has not been printed. The Seattle Times, a competing paper under a joint operating agreement, managed to print only 13,000 copies of its regular circulation of over 200,000. The papers located alternate facilities to print a reduced version of their Saturday editions, and their joint Sunday issue was also expected to be reduced.

At Sea-Tac Airport, three terminals were shut down overnight due to the storm. Concourse A and the South Satellite terminal lost power, and a blown-out window caused Concourse C to also close. All terminals were back in working order by midday Friday. Many flights were delayed or cancelled. Likewise, in Oregon, Portland International Airport reported at least 40 flights cancelled. At Seattle’s Boeing Field, winds flipped a private plane over, colliding with another plane.

The Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers football game was delayed 15 minutes. A pre-game power surge temporarily took the Qwest Field’s video displays offline. The gridiron was plagued by standing water, as the stadium’s loudspeakers played “Who’ll Stop The Rain?” shortly before kickoff.

Thursday night’s storm comes after a previous regional storm in the Seattle area earlier in the week, in which trees in a few Seattle suburbs fell onto roads, powerlines, and two school buses. In those incidents no one was hurt, and there were a few spotty power outages.

This is the second serious storm to hit the Northwest since Thanksgiving, In late November, record-setting snowfall had a similar disabling effect on the region.

Most all of us have at least one bbq grill appliance-whether we host an occasional summer bbq or grill all year long. This said, no matter what appliance you purchase, the brand, or the warranty; grills will wear out after a certain amount of time and use. That is normal wear and tear. Depending on what kind of grill you choose, may vary how long you have to go before this happens-but at one point or another, you will be faced with the challenge of getting a new bbq grill for your grilling and cooking needs or replacing a part that may be worn out.

When it comes to your grill-this is the most common of situations that occurs: all of a sudden, your grill stops working, and you have no idea why. You made sure to refill the tank and you know how to properly operate the thing-but it just won’t work; or perhaps, just won’t work properly. What do you do? Many just assume that their barbecue grills have lasted their life, and it’s time to get a new one. Of course, this is what manufacturers want you to believe; but chances are, all you need is a solid replacement part to get your grill operating back at its optimum. If you know little to none about grills and how to buy replacement parts-do not fear, for two reasons: first, because it is more than common; and second, because this article tells the novice everything they need to know about buying replacement grill parts-so you can save time, money, and hassle in the long run.

Most Common Parts that Need Replacing

There are a number of parts that make up your grill, but really only a few that will end up needing to be replaced. Maybe your bbq is working ok, but it’s just not cooking evenly; or perhaps, it’s just taking longer than it used to; or moreover, maybe it is charbroiling the outside of your steaks, but leaving the inside more than a little bloody and raw. These are all too common occurrences with bbq grills-no matter what the brand or level. This said, you need to know what the most common solutions in the way of replacement parts are. The following are the most common of grill parts, needed most often to return a grill back to optimum grilling power and quality:

— Heat Plate

— Cooking Grate

— Pipe Burner

— Warming Rack

While all of these items seem small and inconsequential, they are, in fact, quite necessary to the overall function of your grill. This said, instead of replacing the entire expensive system, most often all that is needed is a replacement of one of these parts. Comparatively, the hassle, time, and money spent are seemingly limitless. This is why it is vital to figure out-prior to trashing your grill-is one of these simple parts might need replacing.

So, you’ve done your research, looked for the tell tale signs of compartmental problems, and you’ve discovered that it is one or a few parts that should be replaced. What now? Now, you need to understand some very basic principles of part replacing when it comes to your grill. First, it is of the utmost concern that you know exactly what part your grill requires. Most often, if a grill is by a certain brand that is a household name, it will ask in the manual for a part by the same manufacturer. The first aspect of finding the right solution to this is to know that you must know the exact number and specs of the part that fits the grill. Second to this, it is vital to know that some businesses do carry the same part-and it isn’t by the same manufacturer-but it will fit your grill. These are what is called universal grill parts. The best protocol when refitting your grill to its original optimum grilling and cooking potential is to go with the manufacturer-it is true-but in the case, when the manufacturer is either no longer in business, or perhaps the grill is no longer carried-and therefore the replacement parts have been discontinued-universal parts have been manufactured to accurately fit your grill, and get it back to its original operating condition.
