Two people have died in Scotland as a result of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. The Scottish Government revealed the information today.

Both of the victims were adults. One came from NHS Ayrshire and Arran and the other came from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This announcement from the Scottish National Health Service (or NHS) means that the number of deaths from the virus in the country has now increased to 28.

Nicola Sturgeon, who is the current Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing in Scotland, made a statement about the situation: “I am sorry to have to announce two more deaths and my thoughts are with the patients’ loved ones at this distressing time.” Nicola said that most people who caught the virus would make a full recovery after experiencing mild symptoms of the flu and that both of the victims in this particular case had underlying health problems. Sturgeon, who is also the Deputy First Minister of Scotland said: “The vaccination is being rolled out but please wait until you are invited before visiting your GP for the vaccine.”

A Royal Navy pilot has safely ejected from his Harrier GR7 aircraft moments before it crashed in a field near the small village of Ashwell in the county of Rutland in England. The crash occurred at about 1350 BST today.

The pilot was taken by air ambulance to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment for spinal injuries.

Local resident Vic Harrison spoke to the BBC about the incident: “I thought he didn’t stand a chance, but I looked up and saw the parachute of the pilot. I really thought he had hit the houses. It was a narrow miss – it must have been just 400 yards from our house. It has been an exceptionally lucky escape.”

The plane, from the nearby RAF Cottesmore airbase, was on a training mission and is said not to have been carrying any weapons.

The placement for first and second place at the 2012 Preakness Stakes could have been a replay of the Kentucky Derby earlier this month as I’ll Have Another came in first with Bodemeister behind in second. In this race, Creative Cause finished third.

By winning the Kentucky Derby and the 137th Preakness Stakes, I’ll Have Another has a chance at winning the US Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing. The final race I’ll Have Another would have to win is the Belmont Stakes, which will be held on June 9.

I’ll Have Another was not favored to win the Preakness Stakes and his odds were set at 3-1. Bodemeister, who was the favorite at 2-1 odds, was the speed horse again as he led the field for most of the race just as he did at the Kentucky Derby. This time, Creative Cause was following close behind in second by the time the field of horses reached the far turn. Just as in the Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another pushed faster in the final leg of the race. However, the Preakness Stakes finish was closer with I’ll Have Another squeezing by the pacesetter at the very end to win the race in 1:56.9.

Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez has won his last four races with I’ll Have Another. He gave I’ll Have Another the credit for the finish, “No one put him in this race. He put himself into the race,” he said. Gutierrez said all he had to do was signal to the horse that it was time to challenge Bodemeister and the horse did the rest.

The winning horse is owned by financier J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill.

The Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland was filled with a crowd of 121,309 to watch the Triple Crown hopeful. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.

Dog+: Dogs Using Social Media

by

Maria Elena

The social networks of today allow us humans to interact with each other and meet new people and friends every day. Some folks have had the inspiration to create social network pages for their pets in the past to help them meet other pets out in the world. Lately, these networking advantages are now becoming specifically available for your pup.

Creating your pup s profile

As these newer social media become doggy specific, owners are able to interact with fellow pup owners that share common interests. You can create a profile via the internet to meet people that you would not otherwise have run into at your regular dog park. More practically, if you were an owner of a Corgi breed of pup, you can seek out other Corgi owners in the area near you. This would help people and their pets that share common interests become more interactive with each other. As these owners become more accustomed to using social media, these networks will expand and prove to be a very valuable tool for expanding the social life of you and your pup.

Many uses for dog circles

Doggy oriented social media allows for more companies to interact with pet friendly offers. Vacationing spots and eateries that are pet friendly can now see the pups that they can potentially serve. Creating a network of doggy oriented sites can greatly affect the world our pets live in. These social networks can allow owners the ability to search for doggy oriented places that they may want to visit or simply network with their own community regarding puppy related subjects. You can place information publicly for your fellow pet owners to see and interact specifically with people of a common interest. These networks keep you informed about events such as a fellow doggy s birthday party so that your pup can enjoy the party. There are even possibilities of setting up a dog-sitter for your pup with a fellow dog owner.

Meetups and huddles

Special collars that are utilized to reference your pup s movements have become quite popular. They allow you to uplink your pup s location to social networks so that you can register your pup s movements and create pet hotspots to let other dog owners get a feel for where the action is. This helps new owners find locations where they and their pups can become a part of a doggy oriented community.This is also a beneficial network if you are visiting a new area and want to find out where you should consider taking your pup. A network like this can greatly assist someone that wants to find a great spot for their pup to enjoy at any time of the day in any location.

These networking abilities have proven their quality for us humans by helping us to find new friends and keep in touch with old ones at our convenience so using them for pups seems to be a great chance to prove its versatility. As social networks become more pup friendly, we can expect to expand the experience of being a happy dog owner.

Although, information and communication have become common words in the modern world dominated by technological developments, they always mattered in the agricultural industry. From day one, humans started growing crops, raising livestock and catching fish, they started asking and gathering information from all available sources. With the changing world, farmers and agricultural industry are changing at the same pace. Agreed, that still many farmers think accounting is a job involving entering credit and debit in two separate columns, which is better left off for accountants.

Introduction to Use of Information Technology in Agriculture Industry

Some farmers are using computers and software’s; however, these software’s seem to be serving general purpose. Usually, farmers are using a system that can be used by any business, designed for “Single entry” bookkeeping program or a generic version allowing low and “Double entry” accounting feature. Nevertheless, such systems in no way meet the purpose of using accounting software in agriculture. It is observed that these systems are not enough to track the information or print records regularly needed by farming enterprises or the farmers. In short, such software’s will offer simplicity but will lack in flexibility.

The details that are missed out by such generic or simple accounting software are offered by comprehensive accounting software that is specifically developed by OneAccounting for Agriculture industry. Henceforth, farmers will not have to focus on credits and debits, balance sheets or income statements, finances or taxes; but they will get all the management information needed to take better and productive decisions.

Farmers do understand the importance and impact of advanced technology for minimizing labor costs and increasing profits. Way again, it has been noticed that farmers usually make a heavy investment in machineries and tools, but fail to incur similar investments in other technological sectors that would save them time and money.

According to one of the reports, agricultural production has increased by about 80% since last fifty years. This growth was possible due to the use of smart crop management and optimal use of land. As of now, farmers are focusing on increasing yield per acre and per animal.

What Farmers Should Understand Before Investing in Accounting Software -> Technology is Important Not the Software:

Already farmers were using innovative technology like tractors mounted with GPS and multispectral imaging devices. By squeezing every drop of profit they make, farmers are investing hundreds and thousands of dollars in the latest technology. The only thing is; it is a narrow aspect of investing in technology, which should be assisted with a comprehensive expense management and accounting software.

Although an accounting, management software is not directly related to or is not in direct connection with the crops in the field, it offers detailed data and schematic of which crop is doing better, crops that are not yielding profits and particular part of land that is under-performing.

-> If Farming is a Business, Treat it like one:

although farmers are spending time in their fields and for pasturing, they do it because they want to earn money. In fact, farms are a source of business either offering profit or loss. For ensuring this asset, perform to its fullest potential by increasing efficiency and maximizing the ROI, use of accounting software is must. When it comes to accounting and farming, sadly, most of the farmers are relying on the cash basis of accounting. This method usually fails to reflect profit, loss and total earning of their business. Such farmers are not only ignoring implementing technology in a broader perspective, but they are neglecting the best foregoing accounting practices that otherwise will help them in increasing their ROI.

Tips for Selecting the Best Accounting Software for Agriculture ->

The agricultural industry as a whole deals with the utilization of natural resources making it susceptible to huge accounting implications. The basic agricultural needs often surpass the basic accounting needs of tracking finances in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and in the general ledger. Agricultural accounting software should be able to track inventory, usage of land, tending processes, discoveries, extraction and other things that will integrate finance and operations in one system.

->

Agriculture is a business dealing exceptionally with raw materials. The system should support increased and enhanced movement of these goods in the downstream. Accounting Software developed and designed by OneAccoutning is compatible to maximize logistics and inventory management for effectively delivering goods in the market.

->

Apart from inventory management and utilization of natural resources, it is good if the software offers few advanced technological features. Wastage calculation, lot or batch based inventory tracking, different units of measurement conversion and interest calculation. OneAccounting software is integrated with some relevant and industry specific features that are seldom found in any other accounting system.

->

The agriculture industry has its own language; therefore, it is important that the software you choose should speak your language. Ensure that you prefer investing in software that allows enough scope to customize the software as per your individual needs. Software offering enough flexibility to determine various fields and reports is extremely important, especially when your aim is to generate information. Find a software that allows such customization and implementation of customized fields in a seamless manner.

->

Of all the necessities, the agricultural industry is in strong need of accounting software that helps them in all the aspects of budgeting and forecasting. Keeping aside the regular challenges of predicting demand, the agriculture industry is always facing uncertainty from the supplier side. Comprehensive accounting software with well-integrated inventory management system will help you forecast, strategize, plan and implement theories and solutions to face What-If scenarios.

A transgender woman attacked in Harlem, New York last week died on Thursday after being declared brain dead and taken off life support. Police are treating the death of Islan Nettles, 21, as a hate crime.

They were called faggots, they were called he-shes, she-males, things of that nature

Nettles was walking with transgender friends early on August 17 when they met a group of men opposite a local police building. Police say a fight ensued after the men discovered the group was transgender and local man Paris Wilson, 20, was arrested at the scene.

Wilson was charged by prosecutors in Manhattan with assault and harassment. Prosecutors say more serious charges could be brought after police received allegations homophobic language was used, with a hate crimes team now investigating. The death has been ruled a homicide and a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner’s office said Nettles was killed by “blunt impact head injuries”.

The criminal complaint Wilson presently faces says a police officer found Nettles “unconscious on the ground with a swollen shut eye and blood on her face”. Wilson is accused of punching Nettles to the ground and then repeatedly hitting her while she lay there.

Fashion became a definite decision for my life after my first show with my hand designed garments in high school

Nettles was interested in a fashion career, working as an intern for local fashion firm Ay’Medici. “Fashion became a definite decision for my life after my first show with my hand designed garments in highschool”, she wrote on LinkedIn, where she described herself as “anti-violence”. She has previously instructed fashion at Harlem Children’s Zone, undertaking studies at New York College of Technology and the Bread and Roses Integrated Arts High School.

Her mother, Dolores Nettles, told press Nettles and her friends were subject to transphobic insults. “They were called faggots, they were called he-shes, she-males, things of that nature,” she said.

Daniel L. Squadron of the New York State Senate said yesterday in a statement “Islan was 21 years old — 21 years old. And her life and future were stolen from her. Let’s be clear: intolerance, discrimination and hate have no place in New York or anywhere.” He called for the passage of a related bill he supports, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act.

Wilson is presently free on bail, with a court hearing scheduled for October 4.

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with David Sparrow. Sparrow is a candidate in Ontario’s Don Valley West riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner. The riding was set to vote in a by-election on September 22, 2008, following the resignation of John Godfrey, but Stephen Harper’s sudden election call nulled that effort.

Also running in the Toronto riding are Liberal Rob Oliphant, Conservative John Carmichael, Green Georgina Wilcock, and Communist Catherine Holliday.

The following is an interview with Sparrow, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.
