Vermicompost: A gardeners friend

I recently had written an article on properly recycling your food waste garbage. I am big into recycling and feel that we can all do something beyond just putting our cans, bottles and paper into the proper bins for our local municipalities to come and get.

I bring up the food waste recycling for a reason and you gardeners are going to love this (if you do not know it already), and that is being able to turn your food waste into what is called vermicompost.

Vermicompost is nothing more than worm castings. Worms eat something and then their waste is called castings. These castings are an incredible source of a variety of nutrients for your soil.

In my previous article I wrote how you should just bury your food waste and that the worms will find it and eat it and of course produce worm castings better know as vermicompost. It is a pretty simple solution and very little work for you. It adds a lot of nutrients to your soil, and if you have a vegetable garden like me, it keeps my soil top notch.

But what if you dont have a garden, or an area to bury the food waste, what then? You still want to recycle your food waste and keep it out of a landfill, so what can you do to help? You can start your own worm bin.

Did you ever have an ant farm when you were kid? If so then this is very similar only with worms. What you need is a large Rubbermaid container, some newspaper, food scraps and some worms.

Take your Rubbermaid container and drill holes in the bottom. This will allow any moisture to drain (well get to more on that in a moment). Also drill holes (a bit larger like 3/8 to ) in the sides and the top for ventilation. We wouldnt want to suffocate our worms.

Now that you have the bin all set you need to prepare the interior for the worms arrival. Shred up some newspaper and soak it with water. Now wring out the newspaper because you do not want to have it drenched, you just want it nice and saturated for the worms. This newspaper will serve as your bedding. Place the newspaper at the bottom of your Rubbermaid container using only half of the container. The other half you want to keep empty (Ill explain why in a moment).

Now you need to get yourself some worms. Red wigglers are the best variety to use. You can order them online if you do not have access to digging some up in your backyard. If you order them you can start with 250 to 500. Yeah I know that sounds like a lot, but if you feed them properly you will easily have over 1,000 worms in your bin in 6 to 9 months, so there is no need to buy any more than the minimum offered by wherever it is youre buying them from.

Now that you have your worms you need to put your food scraps in. Good scraps include fruits and veggies, coffee grinds, and so on. Do not add bones, meat or any type of domesticated animal feces. No fidos droppings must still be thrown away.

Once your food is in your bin, add more saturated newspaper to the top. A good two to three inches will do. Add your worms on top of the newspaper and keep the lid off for now. No they wont climb out and go all over your house. What happens is worms hate light and since you have the lid off they will crawl for darker areas, namely underneath the newspaper. This helps get the worms to where you want them to go and that is where the food is.

Check back in about an hour or so to see if all the worms have worked their way down. If they have, put the lid on and walk away. Your bin must remain moist because that is how worms like it, therefore every morning, using a watering can, sprinkle water over top. You do not want to drown the worms, only put enough water in there to keep it moist.

However, remember those holes you drilled earlier in the bottom of the container? Well guess what if you do not put something underneath to catch the moisture, it will surely go everywhere. I recommend taking another Rubbermaid container and putting it underneath the one you are using as your bin. Just make sure you do not cover the holes on the sides of your first bin. You should empty the liquid from your container that catches the moisture on a daily basis. But do not just throw it out, that liquid has valuable nutrients in it. You should use it to water your plants!

Now that you have your worm ecosystem going, check back every so often to see how they are doing. If you notice that the food is nearly gone, then you know it is time to add more to the other side of the Rubbermaid container. This is why we use only one side of the container at a time, this way we can extract our vermicompost from one side while the other is in use by the worms.

Once you fill the other side with new newspaper, food etc, give the worms about 2 weeks to migrate over. They will do this on their own as they, like humans, need food to survive. After two weeks go to your bin and remove the side that should now be vermicompost. If there are still some food scraps left (or worms), remove them and add them to the other side. No sense wasting waste right?

The more worms that you have the quicker the food will be digested. So obviously the fewer worms you have the longer it will take to turn food waste into vermicompost.

Once you have your vermicompost you can take it and add it to your house plants, flower beds, you name it! Your vegetation will thank you for it. They are tired of that same old dirt!

The 3 Idiots Of The Education System

I was conducting a Discover Your True Calling workshop at IIM, Indore last week. I had the afternoon free and decided to see the much acclaimed, high-grossing Bollywood movie 3 Idiots. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, largely because it is a complete indictment of our education system. The message was strikingly similar to the theme of my workshop.

The film is about three students who do not really fit into the prestigious engineering college and are considered idiots by their professor. However, the movie clearly shows who the three real idiots are the educational system, the teachers and the parents. Reflecting on the movie on the flight back to Mumbai, I realized that any real change in education is possible only by transforming these three constituencies.

Idiot #1 – The Education System:

Our current system is performance-oriented rather than mastery-oriented. The emphasis on examinations forces students to learn by rote. They focus on scoring high marks rather than investing the time and energy to understand the subject in depth. A system where true geniuses like Einstein and Ramanujan are considered poor students really needs its head examined. In the movie, this is brilliantly brought out by Aamir Khan playing Rancho the truly outstanding engineer who goes beyond the book to gain mastery.

Idiot #2 The Teachers:

Our current system of pedagogy is faculty-led and follows a fixed curriculum. The average teacher assumes that there is one right answer and that (s)he knows the answer. It is the rare teacher who has the ability to facilitate rather than teach, to nurture rather than preach and to support students who stray from the well-trodden path in search of creative ways to learn. Idiot #3 The Parents:

When Indias HRD Minister Kapil Sibal suggested scrapping of the 10th grade exams, parents were the first to stand up against the proposal. Parents want their children to be at the top of their classes, get admitted to the best colleges and follow traditional career options engineering, medicine, management and the like.

Parents rarely encourage their children to discover their true passions and pursue mastery rather than mediocrity. The movies middle class Quereshis, who want their son to be an engineer, and the poorer Rastogis, who see education as a way out of poverty, are typical of todays Indian parents. They would probably be the toughest nut to crack.

The 21st century calls for talented people who are masters in their chosen fields of work. It calls for collaboration among passionate individuals, from different disciplines, to address the truly challenging issues and opportunities that the world presents. The current assembly-line approach to education falls severely short. We are not equipping our children to succeed in their world. The appeal of the movie is universal and obvious.

Fire rated downlights are designed as a safety measure and will prevent the spread of fire. If you are unsure about whether you need to install them or not then think about the small amount of cost that is involved then consider what and why they are designed to do.

Fire rated downlights are made from or contain intumescent material, this material expands when it reaches a certain temperature sealing off the hole and slowing down the spread of fire. The fire is then unable to have direct access to the structure of the building.

Fire rated downlights are used to maintain the ceilings fire integrity. Part B of the Building Regulations covers fire safety and has been a legal requirement since 1987. Not all downlights have to be fire rated but it is important to know when and where they should be used.

When a recessed downlight is installed, a hole must be cut into the ceiling to allow the downlight to be mounted in. This hole reduces the fire integrity of the ceiling. In the event of a fire, flames spread through the holes and set light to the structure of the building. Most ceilings are constructed from timber joists which in the event of a fire, could burn and collapse in a matter of minutes. If the structure of the building is made from materials with higher temperature ratings such as concrete then fire rated downlights are not necessary.

The minimum fire rating for downlights is 30 minutes; this rating is for ceiling joists with a spacing of 600mm. This should allow enough time for the occupants to escape the building or for the fire service to extinguish the fire without floor or the entire building collapsing.

There are three types of structurally different ceilings:

1. 30 minute ceilings have ceiling joists with a spacing of 600mm and with one layer of 12.5mm plasterboard fixed to the underside of the joist.

2. 60 minute ceilings have ceiling joists with a spacing of 600mm and with a double layer of 15mm plasterboard fixed to the underside of the joist.

3. 90 minute ceilings have ceiling joists with a spacing of 450mm and with a double layer of 15mm plasterboard fixed to the underside of the joist.

Most fire rated downlights are suitable for all three types of ceilings but some are not and only rated for 30 or 60 minute ceilings.

When downlights are being installed in upper floor ceilings with roof space only above them they don’t necessarily need to be fire rated. This is because there is little risk of the fire spreading through the holes and onto the structure of the building. However, fire rated downlights have many other advantages. They are also approved to other important Building Regulations such as Part C – moisture protection, Part E – acoustic resistance.

Building Regulations now state that a room should be air tight, if you have multiple downlights that are not fire rated warm air will escape through the holes. In cold ceiling spaces such as loft areas, downlights act as chimneys and draw out the warm air from a room.

Even if you feel that fire rated downlights are not important for preventing the spread of fire then these other Building Regulations should be considered. Most adjustable downlights do not provide moisture protection or acoustic resistance.

To summarise, although fire rated downlights are slightly more expensive, they are safer, comply with the Building Regulations and may offer peace of mind.

Recognized widely as a manual operated sleeve valve, it is used within many industries involving various applications related to the control of material flows. The elastomer of a flow pinch is located within the casing of the valve. A plunger device with a pinching component is located adjacent to the flow pinch, attached to one end of the plunger. A specified platform is situated in a position opposite the pinching component. The elastomer of the control pinch valve can therefore be pinchd between the pinching component and the platform. This in turn, exerts control over the flow of fluid through the pinch.

In the designated range of pinch valves, a manual operated pinch valve is particularly adaptable for use within applications involving the control of fluids with relatively low viscosity. Forming part of the valve structure is a valve block, with a bore capable of receiving a flexible pinch. Linked transversely and directly to the bore is a channel, at the intersection of which is a defined pinch chamber. The pinching action of the valve is actuated by a piston rod and a free-floating ball component, situated between the rod end and the flexible manual pinch valve.

It is a valve designed for use within applications such as sprinkler systems, standpipe systems or as a manually operated deluge control valve. A manual pinch valve controls the flow of water to small open headed extinguishing systems and operates as a zone control valve. Any reduction in pressures and turbulence interference is minimized by large ports, which provide a straight-through flow of water. The installation of this valve system is simple, with conservation of space and the provision of visual indication during operating conditions.

The control pinch valve incorporates a variety of valves, among which are pressure regulating or control valves. An important operation of these valves is the automatic control of water pressure under flowing and static conditions. The water and its volume delivery rates at the outlet, depends on the control pressure within the system. A constant pressure is maintained within specified limitations, influenced by the pinch equipment used beyond this type of control pinch valve. General recommendations are that this type of valve is utilized when a system pressure exceeds 175Psi.
