As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

Whether you re headed to Haiti as a volunteer helping to restore the earthquake-ravaged country, or to Iraq as an employee rebuilding its infrastructure, or even off the shores of Somalia as ship crewmember and scuba diving adventurist, you or your boss will most likely be looking at higher premiums if you can get life insurance at all.

All three countries are included on the U.S. State Department s travel warning list, which is updated constantly, and which insurance brokers say is used to determine how much you will be charged for a new or updated life policy or if you will be offered a policy altogether.

According to the Web site, travel warnings are issued to describe long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable, or when a U.S. embassy or consulate closes, restricting government aid to its citizens there. The list includes war-torn countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, Chad and Sudan with their rebel violence and

Mexico with its violence among drug cartels. In each case, the chances of being kidnapped and held for ransom, or injured or killed in the crossfire, are real.

The more unstable and dangerous a country is and the more likely something bad will happen, the less likely you are to get insurance, not even from Lloyd s of London, which provides specialty insurance if you can pay the price, says Ryan Pinney, a high-risk specialist with Pinney Insurance Center, Inc. in Roseville, Calif.

Members of the military going into war zones have coverage through the government-provided Servicemen s Group Life

Insurance, which Pinney says costs about $24 a month for $400,000 coverage. In addition, many private insurance companies cover all military members at no extra cost, says Michael Tessler, president of Brokerage Unlimited in St. Louis, Mo.

However, most companies won t insure you if you are going to a war zone as a contractor or working on an oil rig off the coast of Nigeria.

Iaian Donald, with Control Risks, an independent specialty risk consultancy, says some companies that send workers to dangerous places will pay for their employees life insurance as part of their accident policy. Huge corporations like Haliburton, have global policies to cover any destination. The price can be nominal if the company is big enough, Donald says. Companies that send employees to a particularly dangerous place, including foreign journalists, can buy a policy from a high-risk specialist such as Lloyd s of London for a certain number of staff and the underwriter will come up with a price, Donald says.

Pinney says if you re just flying into Afghanistan s main airport, which is a green zone, and don t leave the area, and can document that, insurance companies will insure you.

If you re doing long-term missionary work in a dangerous country with no easy access to good medical care, few insurance companies will insure you, Tessler says.

If you re a member of the American Red Cross or the Peace Corp., Pinney says you will need to have your own life insurance as neither agency provides it for their volunteers. He says you would probably be limited to standard health class if embarking on a two-week trip to help a dangerous country like Haiti, which means you ll have a mid-rating if you are relatively healthy. He says underwriters will look at where you re going, what you ll be doing while there and how long you ll be gone, to determine a price.

It could cost you as much as 25 to 50 percent more for a policy because of the danger, Pinney says.

If you plan on indulging in extreme sport activity such as scuba diving or rock climbing during your off-work hours, expect to pay even more. Pinney says you are rated up two times for each sport you do. You could pay 50 cents per $1,000. Multiply 50 cents by a $100,000 policy and it gets expensive. If you buy the cheapest 10-year term insurance you would pay $160 to $180 a year for a $500,000 policy if you re rated preferred best, and $310 to $360 a year for a standard policy if you do these sports, Pinney says.

Top 10 Most dangerous countries

Following is a list of the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world right now, according to Control Risks. The company advises and assists corporations, government and non-government entities to help reduce their and their employees risks. Some countries are just dangerous in specific areas, as listed, not necessarily the country as a whole.

For example, if there is a high risk for travel, foreign visitors from the U.S. may find themselves in a situation where there is a chance of being kidnapped when traveling by foot or land, or they may be unable to get a flight out of the country if civil or political unreast erupts. Also, some countries are so dangerous for foreign travelers that there is a high probability that if something were to happen to them, the embassy in that region would not be able to help.

The countries are listed in alphabetical order; all are extremely dangerous in terms of security, most in terms of travel, and all are on the U.S. State Department travel warning list.

1.

Afghanistan: With the war on terror having shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan, and the risk of terrorism high, the country as a whole is considered extremely risky for travel, according to Donald. Control Risks rates it extremely risky when it comes to operating a business in various regions of the country. For instance, there are risks that would impact a business logistically in addition to fraud and corruption which often includes exposure to officials seeking bribes. Also, there are high security risks, a great potential for terrorism and extreme political unrest.

2.

Chad, Sudanese border: The two countries have been engaged in hostile relations for years, with each supporting rebel groups in the other country. The battles have left many dead, particularly in the Darfur region of Sudan. Control Risks rates it extreme for security, high for political unrest, travel and business ventures and low for terrorism.

3. Congo (North Kivu province): Militia violence against the government in this African country has placed it high on the warning list, Donald said. It received extreme ratings for security and travel, political unrest and business operations and low for terrorism.

4.

Iraq: U.S. troops still are primarily in this country now to keep peace between the Arabs and Kurds, but hostile relations between the two sides continue. It is still rated extremely dangerous for security, terrorism and travel, high for politics and business operations, Donald said.

5.

Pakistan: The threat of terrorism and the security factor against the government have placed the entire country on high security alert, Donald said, with the Federally Administered Tribal Areas the only area in the world to receive extreme risk ratings across the board from Control Risks. The military has been especially active in this Afghan Taliban and al Qaeda stronghold.

6.

Palestinian Territories, Gaza Strip: Ongoing fighting between Palestinians and Israelis over this portion of land has consistently placed this area on the travel danger list. Control Risks rates it extremely dangerous for political, security and travel reasons, high for business operations and low for terrorism.

7.

Somalia: With no working government, law enforcement or institutions, and with pirates attacking ships on the water, this country has been labeled dangerous both on land and water, Donald said. It has been given extremely dangerous ratings in all areas but terrorism, where it was given a high rating for danger by Control Risks.

8.

Sri Lanka: Fighting government factions have resulted in one of the longest and bloodiest wars in Asia. The northern province is particularly dangerous, according to Donald, receiving extreme ratings for political, business operations and security reasons and high ratings for terrorism and travel.

9.

Sudan, Darfur: Decades of civil war have included genocidal violence, rapes and mass displacement against civilians, many of whom are left in refugee camps. It received extremely risky ratings in security and travel, high in political unrest and business operations and low in terrorism.

10.

Yemen, Saada Province: Fighting between the Yemeni army and rebels in this Northern Province has left many dead and buildings destroyed. And it has left the Saada region with an extreme rating for security and travel, and a high rating for political unrest, business operations and terrorism.

After more than two years, much controversy remains in the case of a British student who was killed in the central Italian university town of Perugia. Two separate trials have been held for the three suspects. All three have been convicted and are in prison serving sentences of 30, 26 and 25 years. But all three continue to proclaim their innocence.

The most well-known of the three young people convicted of the murder of Meredith Kercher in November 2007 is American-born Amanda Knox.

The British tabloid newspapers immediately described Knox as a she-devil and man-eater. A week ago, 22-year-old Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted to 26 and 25 years in prison respectively after a trial that lasted 11 months. The prosecution had requested life imprisonment.

The third suspect, Rudy Guede, from the Ivory Coast, had previously been convicted of 30 years in prison in a fast-track trial. Nick Pisa is a British tabloid journalist who has been covering the story since Kercher’s dead body was found.

“In general I think people were expecting this verdict. It was certainly one that has been anticipated by both the Italian media and the Italian public,” Pisa said. “I think the only people who were surprised were perhaps the Anglo-Saxon press because in the face of the evidence that was presented in court it’s very, very unlikely that this case would have been found guilty in another court.”

No one argues that there is no evidence that puts Knox at the scene of the crime. But the prosecution has said there is plenty of circumstantial evidence that she was involved. He said Knox changed her version of the story many times and also unjustly accused a Congolese bar owner, for whom she had worked.

Knox’s mother, Edda Mellas, insists her daughter is innocent, that she was not home the night Kercher was killed and adds her daughter has been in prison for more than two years without reason.

“She’s devastated, she’s scared that she’s going to be stuck in jail,” Mellas said. “She’s confused… I don’t think she even believed that courts find innocent people guilty of crimes they didn’t commit and especially in this case where there was no evidence.”

Mellas paints a very different picture of her daughter than the one presented by the prosecution and media.

“Amanda’s a great young woman,” Mellas said. “She’s very bright. She’s athletic. She’s kind. She has really, really good friends. She’s just a normal college kid.”

Knox’s family members say they will fight on and appeal the court’s decision. They say the verdict, based on the evidence presented, was wrong. Nick Pisa agrees that the appeal could make the difference for Knox.

“It does appear that the evidence that convicted her was very, very flimsy and I think once they examine this DNA evidence again – let’s remember there was the request for an independent review that was ruled out by the judge,” Pisa said. “And I think that’s probably one of the first things that a new judge will ask for when he comes to review this case.”

By early March the court will provide a written document outlining the reasons behind the verdict. An appeal by Knox’s defense lawyers will be deposited soon after that. In the meantime Knox will have spent her third Christmas in an Italian jail as she awaits for a hearing date to be set, which is unlikely to be before October 2010.

Beginning Monday morning, many BlueFrog and Blue Security users began receiving an email warning them that if they did not remove their email addresses from the Blue Security registry, they would begin to receive huge amounts of unsolicited email. As quickly as four hours after the initial warning message, some users began to receive an unprecedented amount of spam. Most of the messages were simply useless text. Users reported that Blue Security’s website was unavailable or extremely slow in responding.

Blue Security is an online community dedicated to fighting spam. As they became more popular, their member list increased substantially. The members’ email address is encrypted and added to a list of e-mail addresses that wish to stop receiving spam. Blue Security maintains the encrypted list, which uses an encrypted hash function. Spammers are encouraged to remove all addressed from their email list that are also in Blue Security’s Do Not Intrude Registry by using free compliance tools available at Blue Security’s web site.

According to Blue Security’s web site, “A major spammer had started spamming our members with discouraging messages in an attempt to demoralize our community. This spammer is using mailing lists he already owns that may contain addresses of some community members.” Reportedly, Blue Security has received complaints from users about spam allegedly sent from Blue Security promoting their anti-spam solution and web site.

Blue Security states they are “an anti-spam company determined to fight spam and as such never has and never will send unsolicited email.” There are also reports of non-users of BlueSecurity/BlueFrog receiving the warning emails, which now seems is also being sent to email addresses of people who have never added their email address to Blue Security’s Do Not Intrude Registry.

The death toll from the Sendai earthquake has now increased to over ten thousand. In Japan, the National Police Agency has stated that 10,019 are now known to have been killed as a result of the disaster.

The Agency also reported that 2,775 had been injured and the location of 17,541 individuals was unknown. Meanwhile, 1,900 evacuation sites are now thought to be occupied by approximately a quarter of a million people.

When the event happened two weeks ago, 18,000 thousand households were destroyed and 130,000 were damaged by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. In spite of this, twelve of the fifteen north-eastern ports of Japan have recommenced operating, while the majority of the oil terminals of the country remained open, according to Inchcape Shipping Services.

Amongst the aftermath of the earthquake, plant number 3 at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant is suspected to have been damaged and may be releasing radiation. The Japanese government have reported that an ongoing investigation is occurring to attempt to discover the cause of the radiation leak at the power plant. Chinese authorities have reported two Japanese tourists were found to have levels of radiation “seriously exceeding limits” on their clothing and luggage. In Tokyo, the amount of radiation in the supply of water has decreased, however it remains high in various parts of the north of Japan.

According to BBC News Online, two workers were hospitalised because of the leak. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), who operate the building, reported that three employees placing electrical cables at the location were given treatment for being exposed to radioactive water; they had experienced ten thousand times the regular amount of radioactivity. Of those three men, beta rays caused two of them to receive burns. The two individuals did not stop working despite meters advising of unsafe radiation levels. It was later discovered that they were wearing inadequate protective footwear and failed to draw their attention to a radiation alert. TEPCO has since received government orders to improve worker management.

The radiation emitted from the plant has had a significant effect on the Japanese food industry. In the surrounding areas of the plant, shipments of foodstuffs have been prohibited. In Fukushima prefecture, residents have been advised not to consume eleven leafy green vegetable types produced locally due to radiation concerns. There has also been a significant decrease in customer demand at a fish market in Tsukiji.

Japanese product importers have discovered some foodstuffs to have a small radiation amount, which is not thought to be potentially deadly. Numerous Asian countries, the European Union, Australia, Russia and the United States have prohibited milk items, seafood and vegetables from being imported from various Japanese prefectures.

Closing the power plant down may take at least one month to achieve. Speaking to AFP, an individual talking on behalf of TEPCO stated that the company is “still in the process of assessing the damage at the plant, so that we can’t put a deadline on when the cooling operations will work again”. Residents living within thirty kilometres of the plant have been advised to avoid going outdoors to attempt to prevent radiation exposure as far as possible.

A United States Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed Monday (before 3:00 pm CST) after takeoff at Duncan Field at Campus of Texas A&M University, during a routine mission flight shuttling cadets from the university to Camp Swift. Two active-duty soldiers were killed in the crash, and four Army National Guard soldiers were injured.

Second Lt. Zachary Cook, 22, a native of Lufkin, Texas and a December 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University, was killed in the incident. Cook was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps cadre at Texas A&M University and also graduated from Lufkin High School. U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards on Wednesday paid tribute to Cook on the floor of the U.S. Congress. “His loss brings a great sadness to his family and friends, the extended Texas A&M family, and the Army, all of us deprived of this patriotic citizen who was dedicated to serving our great nation in uniform,” he said. Edwards is a Democratic Party member of the United States House of Representatives from the 17th District of Texas, based about Waco.

The crash also killed Sgt. Charles C. Mitts, 42, of Spring, Texas. He died about 9 p.m. Wednesday night at Memorial Hermann Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Ann Brimberry. Mitts was the oldest of five men on board the ill-fated helicopter. He was assigned to Iraq from September 2006 to September 2007 with Company C of the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation Regiment, based in Topeka, Kansas. Mitts was posthumously promoted from his present rank, Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada announced.

The three others on board the UH-60 Black Hawk were injured in the accident. The pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew J. Smith, 41, of Leander, and 1st Lt. Ellis W. Taylor, 31, of Buda, were in stable condition Thursday at Brooke Army Medical Center. Sgt. Richard D. Ravenscraft, 24, of Austin, also was initially listed as critical but upgraded to stable in College Station.

The accident is under investigation by the Combat Readiness/Safety Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama, home of the U.S. Army Aviation Center. “They have a reputation for extreme thoroughness and quickness,” said Texas Guard Capt. Adam Collett. The probe team will review the wrecked helicopter and debris scattered on Duncan Field next to Duncan Dining Hall, near the Corps of Cadets field on the school’s College Station campus, about 100 miles northwest of Houston, Texas. “Every piece the way it landed is still in place,” said Texas Army National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada, adding that investigators began the expert examination of evidence Wednesday morning.

As part of a five-ship training exercise, the Blackhawk helicopter was performing a training demonstration for about 190 Corps of Cadets in the ROTC Rudder’s Rangers Annual Winter Field Training Exercises. It was also used to transfer the students to Duncan Field just off George Bush Drive. When the helicopter was attempting to take off, a rudder reportedly malfunctioned. “At first, it looked like he was hot-dogging and then very quickly it was obvious he was in trouble and not messing around. All of a sudden he dropped straight back down into the ground,” Scott Walker Walker, publications manager for the A&M Association of Former Students said. “There was a bunch of people on Duncan Field and everyone went running and diving for cover,” he added. The aircraft entered a rotational spin upon take off and plummeted down on its tail boom, with its cabin section largely intact.

The chopper will be transferred to the Austin Aviation Support Facility, where it is was based. Some parts of the Blackhawk will also be sent to the Corpus Christi Army Depot for testing, Officials with Texas Military Forces officials said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the crew members involved in this tragedy, and especially to the family and friends of the crew member who reportedly died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” A&M President Elsa Murano stated.

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. It is a utility tactical transport helicopter that replaces the UH-1 “Huey” and has been in use since 1979.It was based at the Austin Army Aviation Support Facility at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The aircraft’s soldiers came from Austin and San Antonio. They were part of the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, at Austin’s Camp Mabry.

The Campus of Texas A&M University, also known as ‘Aggieland’, is located in College Station, Texas, USA. College Station is a city in Brazos County, Texas, situated in Central Texas. It is located in the heart of the Brazos Valley. Aggieland is centrally located within of three of the 10 largest cities in the United States and 75% of the Texas and Louisiana populations. Southside of the campus contains halls both for the Corps of Cadets members and “non-regs”. Facilities for the Corps of Cadets are located in the Quadrangle, or “The Quad”, an area consisting of dormitories, Duncan Dining Hall, and the Corps training fields.

Today many women have to move out of the house for a better earning. Some work because they love to work rather to sit idle at home, some work because they can lend a helping had to their partners and some work because there is no one else in the house to take up the responsibilities of the kids and their expenses. Whatever the reasons may be but it is quite sure that these women have become smarter and they know how to defend themselves while they are at work or even how to protect their children while they are left home with the baby sitters. These days the malls are loaded up with innumerable security equipments like the hidden cameras, the spy cameras or the nanny cameras. While many of us are aware of these equipments but there are many who are unaware to why to use these security equipments. Here are some motives to why to use these equipments.

1) The hidden cameras or the spy cameras can be used to keep an eye on the baby sitter at home.

2) These cameras can be used in the shops and working places where an individual can protect his belongings from being burgled and even to keep a watchful eye on the employees while they are working.

3) We can use the hidden cameras to keep an eye on our children when they at home alone to know what they are doing during our absence or even to keep an eye on the partner if you suspect him/her having an ill legal affair with some one else.

4) People who travel till late night can also use these types of cameras so that they can record all the happenings.

5) The investigators or the administration can use these cameras for surveillance purposes.

No matter whatever may be the reasons but the hidden cameras, the spy cameras and the nanny cameras have proved to be the remarkable equipments in surveillance purposes which have excellent records of giving accurate results all the times they have been used?

I was continuously nervous and was not able to concentrate on my work due to the thought when I had to leave my baby with the baby sitter. When I had no other option but to leave her at home then one of my relatives’ suggested that I should buy a nanny cam and get it installed in the house so that I could keep a cautious watch on the baby sitter. I readily agreed and I placed an order for the 2.4 GHz Classic Cube Wood Clock Radio Camera online through the internet.

This is the most gorgeous and attractive camera I have ever seen because of its American Classic Pear Wood finishing. The pea green LCD provides a convenient view of all the recording. The imperceptible camera inspects from within the amplifier frame at an angle of 93 degree. This generally looks like an AM/FM cube alarm clock. This wireless safety camera is well motorized having the capacity to capture images up to 700 feet of range with a 4 channel receiver integrated which can be further connected to the USB. I placed this camera on the shelf where the baby sitter is usually found with my little one and now all the events were being captured and I was relieved that the baby sitter was not at all misbehaving with my child.
