Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

“Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Those who like to think more and design are the first preference for various CAD jobs. Students coming out from website design courses in Mumbai also opt for some CAD jobs due to the similarity in the level of creativity required for it. For getting good and high paying CAD jobs in Mumbai the students have engineering or architecture as fields to select from. Each of the fields has its own job growth statistics and salary opportunities to go with. Majority of the CAD drafters either hold an associates degree or a certificate.

CAD drafters primarily employ AutoCAD, which is the AEC industrys leading drafting as well as design software for preparing 2D as well as technical drawings. These drawings are primarily used by the drafters as blueprints for the construction of products and structures including buildings, machinery, microchips, electrical & plumbing systems, vehicles, toys and several other manufactured goods. The drafting professionals working on AutoCAD are associated with several job titles including, engineer, drafter, estimator, designer, modeller, architect or illustrator.

The AutoCAD drafters need to think out of the box and create innovative and appealing designs. How can they go about this? Well, the best AutoCAD drafters combine characteristics such as creativity and spatial relationships with mathematics and analytical thinking and the result is the aforementioned work. AutoCAD helps you in every walk of your professional life as it helps you in bringing ideas to life and that too regardless of your CADD career lying in civil engineering, architecture or even entertainment sector. In todays environment, especially in the AEC industry AutoCAD is considered to be the most sought after software and the courses related to it are in great demand similar to UI/UX design courses in Mumbai. The overall demand to the jobs related to the tool is quite high as various versions of AutoCAD and other Autodesk products are particularly designed for drafters in specific industries and job roles.

How to become an AutoCAD Drafter?

For the position of AutoCAD drafter, the AEC companies primarily select those students who get trained in recent version of AutoCAD or a specialized Autodesk drafting program such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit Architecture or 3ds Max. AutoCAD drafting can be learnt in a two year program at a technical or trade school, as part of an associate or bachelors degree from an accredited university, or through a post-secondary diploma or certificate program.

High Paying CAD Jobs

A recent study suggests that employment for drafters is estimated to grow by 1% from the current period up to 2022. It might look slower than the IT sector, however, those students having appropriate AutoCAD knowledge and specializations would have a great deal of job opportunities.

A certificate or an associates degree program is all whats required to get started in a CAD design career. There are several options available for a CAD designer depending on their interests. They have the option to work in medical or aerospace engineering. Other fields such as construction and architecture also incorporate some very high paying jobs for CAD designers.

The 1,200-ton MV Rachel Corrie, an Irish aid ship, was seized by the Israeli Naval Forces, as it attempted to challenge the blockade of Gaza. It was seized in international waters, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Gaza’s shore.

The military said its forces boarded ship from the sea, not helicopters and didn’t meet any resistance. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said: “No contact has yet been made with the kidnapped passengers but we have learned that they have been taken to Holon detention centre where they could be deported as early as tonight.”

Passengers include Irishman Dennis Halliday, a former assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Northern Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, and a group of Irish and Malaysian pro-Palestinian activists.

The ship, named in honor of American peace activist Rachel Corrie, contains support including: toys, school supplies, wheelchairs, medical equipment and cement, a material that Israel has restricted from entry into Gaza. The crew had rejected an offer to unload its cargo in Israel and accompany it across the border.

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign initially organised the ship. Jenny Graham, a Free Gaza Movement (FGM) activist, assured that everything aboard the ship had been inspected in Ireland. A FGM activist Greta Berlin, based in Cyprus, said: “We are an initiative to break Israel’s blockade of 1.5 million people in Gaza. Our mission has not changed and this is not going to be the last flotilla.”

This comes after the death of nine activists when Israeli commandos raided the ‘Gaza Freedom Flotilla’ that planned to breach the Gaza blockade.

Many factors of a child’s birth and the condition of the newborn are linked to the future development of autism, but no single factor has been identified as the cause, a meta-analysis of forty previously published research studies concludes.

Autism refers to a cluster of neurological developmental disorders, ranging to mild and severe, that interfere the child’s ability to adjust normally, including defects in normal communication and social interaction.

The systematic review, published in Monday’s issue of Pediatrics, presented the results of a meta-analysis of over sixty perinatal and neonatal risk factors associated with autism reported in the forty published studies. It identified sixteen that were significantly associated with autism. These included low birth weight, complications associated with delivery, fetal distress during labor, “poor condition” of the newborn along with a low Apgar score, multiple births, birth injuries to the baby, and hemorrhaging of the mother during childbirth.

However, the review found that often these factors are linked; not occurring independently but in combination, making the effect of any one factor difficult to determine. Further, the conclusions of the studies often were in conflict with each other regarding the relationship of any single one of the factors to autism. The researcher concluded there was “insufficient evidence to implicate any one perinatal or neonatal factor in autism etiology.” However, they said some evidence suggested the presence of “multiple neonatal complications may increase autism risk.”

[M]ultiple neonatal complications may increase autism risk.

The review also ruled out some factors, finding some were not linked to autism such as the use during childbirth of anesthesia, forceps delivery or vacuum extractor delivery. High birth weight and large head circumference of the newborn were also discounted.

The researcher who headed the study, Hannah Gardener, who was at the Harvard School of Public Health at the time and is now at the University of Miami School of Medicine, emphasized in an interview that parents should not worry if any one of the factors was present at the time of their child’s birth.

There is no single strong cause of autism.

She said, “There is no single strong cause of autism.”

Twin studies have concluded that there is a genetic component to autism and Gardener emphasized the importance of the review’s conclusions that point to the need for continuing study of how factors surrounding birth may interact with genetic factors to result in future autism in a child.

Michael Ignatieff, the frontrunner in the Liberal leadership race, said that Israel committed a war crime when it bombarded the Lebanese village of Qana in July.

“This is consistent with the anti-Israeli position that has been taken with virtually all of the candidates of the Liberal leadership, and I don’t think it’s helpful or useful,” said Harper, who has refused to back down from his comment. “I think we all remember last summer when the Liberals were making all these anti-Israeli comments.”

Harper told reporters that the only two of the eight Liberal leadership candidates who had distanced themselves from such remarks at the time were Joe Volpe and Scott Brison.

Ignatieff said yesterday that “it would be up to international bodies to determine whether Israel had committed war crimes at Qana.” He also said he thought both sides in the conflict were guilty of crimes against civilians and that it was “disgraceful for Harper to suggest the Liberals were anti-Israeli”.

“Canadians deserve a Prime Minister that helps Canadians from all communities to find a common language in which we can speak about difficult issues together,” Ignatieff said. “All communities in Canada have a right to contribute to the public debate about where Canada’s national interest lies but no community has the right to determine what can and cannot be said.” “And no Prime Minister has the right to say that anyone who voices criticism of Israel is an enemy of Israel.”

Liberal MP Ariela Cotler, whose husband Irwin Cotler is supporting Bob Rae’s campaign, announced that she has quit the party over Ignatieff’s assertion that Israel committed war crimes. Ignatieff lacks “moral integrity” and accused him of “sacrificing the truth for personal political gains in the upcoming leadership election.” She said she “and many of her friends” are no longer planning to attend the Liberals’ December leadership convention in Montreal, Ariela Cotler said on Friday, in a letter to the editor in the National Post.

Ignatieff’s comment last week has also cost him the co-chair of his Toronto campaign, MP Susan Kadis, who withdrew her support from his leadership bid on Wednesday.

Canadian Jewish groups criticized the candidate for his comments. Israel’s ambassador to Canada, Alan Baker, said Thursday that Ignatieff’s statement was “upsetting and disappointing.”

Bob Rae, commenting on the PM’s remarks, said it is dangerous “to suggest there is a pro-Israel party in Canada and an anti-Israel party in Canada.”

“It’s untrue. It’s a big lie. It’s a big smear. And it isn’t going to work on me. And if he thinks he can get away with it, he’s sadly mistaken,” Mr. Rae said. “It’s just a basically thoughtless, deeply divisive thing to say, and I think it’s something we have to put a stop to right now. That’s it. We cannot carry on politics in this country like this. It will not work. It divides Canadians. It’s something for which he should be thoroughly embarrassed.”

Stéphane Dion, one of the leadership candidates, said the Prime Minister insulted everyone who wanted to see a ceasefire in the fighting between Israel and Lebanon.

“He is insulting all the people that legitimately thought that the solution was a ceasefire. And these people are not anti-Israel. The vast majority of them, they thought that the best way to help a friend was to request a ceasefire,” Mr. Dion said. “I will not allow the Prime Minister to distort what was said in so shameful a way.”

Gerard Kennedy, another leadership candidate, described Mr. Harper’s “brand of politics as creating divisions within the country and diminishing Canada’s reputation” abroad. He said it was unfair and unacceptable to brand the Liberal Party as anti-Israel, and damaging to the quality of public life in the country.

Mr. Ignatieff said his initial comments on Qana were “ripped flagrantly out of context.”

Mr. Ignatieff said he’s accepted a Jewish group’s invitation to visit the Middle East next month to discuss longterm peace solutions, and will meet with the Israeli prime minister as well as Palestinian leaders.

Most professional athletes suffer from young persons disease invincibility. They feel as though short-lived careers will happen to the other guy or the other girl, not him or her, and consequently fail to adequately manage their finances during their often, very short-lived, prime-earning years. Of course, there are always exceptions, such as New York Giants running back Tiki Barber. Mr. Barber decided to walk away from the game during the prime of his career to preserve his health and pursue other professional interests such as broadcasting.

There are others that also take an active interest in the management of their money, stay involved every step of the way, and retire in a great position for the rest of their lives. However, the opposite side of these stories are far too common stories of star athletes whose careers are cut short by injury, stories of star college athletes that never make it professionally (think 1986 Big East college basketball Player of the Year Walter Berry, a highly touted player who lasted less than 3 seasons in the NBA), and the most widespread of them all, stories of athletes bilked by their trusted advisors.

So lets examine the 10 reasons why a professional athlete needs to spend as much time searching for the proper financial advisor as he or she would spend searching for the right person to the rest of his or her life with.

(1)Most professional athletes believe that their careers will be much longer than the probabilities dictate.

The average professional athletes career lasts only 4 years. According to the National Football League Players Association, in the NFL, the average career is 4 years. In Major League Baseball, for pitchers, it is 4.8 years; for hitters, 5.6 year. In the NBA, it is 4.7 years.

(2)While average salaries are high, $1.4MM in 2005 in the NFL, and $2.7MM in 2006 in major league baseball, many players believe that their careers will last much longer than 4 years.

They figure that it will always be the other guy that is out of the profession soon and not him, so they fail to not only preserve wealth, but also they fail to grow what they already have.

(3)Major injuries often cut a professional athletes career short

When this happens, athletes that have depended on their bodies their entire lives for earning potential often find themselves without an adequate alternative skill to earn money after their professional sports careers end. Therefore, building wealth during their prime earning years is critical to a happy retirement.

(4)Many athletes live above their means, blowing huge percentages of their salaries on expensive cribs and rides (anybody that has seen an episode of MTV Cribs is familiar with the excesses of professional athletes in these two areas.)

Just because an athlete’s cash flow at the time seems limitless does not mean that it is. A good financial advisor will ensure that an athlete has a plan B to deal with unforeseeable circumstances.

(5)Many athletes spend more time searching for the perfect ride than they do finding the perfect financial advisor.

Given that this decision will impact the athletes life more than any other decision he will ever make, the process of finding a financial advisor should be rigorous.

(6)Many athletes give their financial advisors too much control.

An inordinate amount of professional athletes dont take a personal interest in the management of their assets, leaving management of their assets to a trusted advisor that more likely wants to bilk the athlete than help him. A great financial advisor will insist that the athlete understand why he or she is making certain investments on behalf of the athlete. A bad financial advisor will tell the athlete, Trust me. This is the best thing for you to do, thereby securing liberty to invest the athletes money into products that will make their wallets fat.

(7)Fairytales like Jerry Maguire dont happen very often in real life.

Though they do happen, the opposite case scenario of being the number one receiver to being out of the NFL the next year scenarios happen far more often.

The last three reasons center around the hazardous world that is the one of professional financial advisors and consultants. Think of the agent from Spike Lees movie He Got Game that was trying to lure Ray Allen as a client, and you have a fairly accurate picture of the level of deception and greed that is common in the world of investment advisors.

(8)Since so many professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, and MLB are minorities, advisors play the race card all the time to gain the trust of clients.

Many athletes fall victim to this pep talk of we got to stick together, fail to adequately screen a financial consultant, and place their trust in incompetent advisors. Case in point. When rapper mogul Master Ps No Limit sports agency was able to convince University of Texas star running back Ricky Williams to be a client, they negotiated, on Rickys behalf, an eight year contract that had very little guaranteed money and was instead dependent upon numerous incentive clauses that had very low probabilities of achievability.

Consequently, Ricky never was able to earn money that should have been guaranteed in the first place given his status coming out of college. In fact, the negotiated contract was so bad that other agents called Rickys employer and congratulated them for getting a top NFL prospect for close to nothing.

(9)Many minority financial advisors again play the race card to gain enough trust to bilk their clients.

Calvin Darden Jr., a 31-year-old stockbroker, gained the trust of New York Knick Latrell Sprewell, and then proceeded to steal $300,000 from him. Sprewell, compared to the great number of athletes also robbed by their financial advisors, actually got off light. William Black, stole more than $11,000,000 from New York Giants star Ike Hilliard and other athletes whose money he handled.

(10)Situations # 8 and # 9 happen because most professional athletes have no idea what questions they need to ask a financial advisor to understand if he or she is competent or incompetent.

Many instead, focus on irrelevant things like the type of car the advisor drives, what kind of suits he or she wears, and what kind of watch he/she wears. Ive had several meetings with professional athletes regarding management of their assets and most of them did not ask any questions that would remotely help them gather enough information to make an informed, intelligent decision about whether or not I would be the right financial advisor for them.

If athletes let financial consultants control the information exchange in meetings, they will get burned because financial consultants are experts in making sales to clients. They can pick the proper strategy to use for each unique situation, pandering to the race card, fear of losing money and ending up broke, or greed. Some professional athletes decline advisors for ridiculous reasons like the car driven by the advisor was not the right kind of car or the suit worn by the advisor was not the right brand. I have seen advisors mortgage their financial future and liquidate their retirement accounts to buy expensive cars. I have seen other financial advisors lease expensive cars they couldnt afford to impress clients.

Yet some athletes would decide to place their money in the hands of these advisors versus much more competent advisors that would manage their money infinitely better. Athletes need to learn what questions they must ask financial consultants during meetings so that they can determine the level of competence of the advisor. Often, athletes will meet with an advisor for two hours and at the end of the meeting, still know nothing more than they knew at the beginning of the meeting that will enable them to make an informed decision about who to select as their financial advisor. One must ask good questions to receive good answers.

With two space walks, 78 million miles and six months on board the International Space Station under their belts, Commander-Science Officer Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov, the station’s 10th crew, landed in Kazakhstan in a Soyuz spacecraft at 6:08 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Also returning was European Space Agency Astronaut Roberto Vittori of Italy, who launched to the Station with the Expedition 11 crew and spent eight days doing experiments. He was aboard under a contract between ESA and the Russian Federal Space Agency.

The re-entry of the ISS Soyuz 9 spacecraft was perfect, returning the astronauts to Earth 53 miles northeast of the town of Arkalyk after 192 days, 19 hours and 2 minutes in space for the Expedition 10 crew. The recovery team reached the capsule in minutes.

They launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan last Oct. 13 at 11:06 p.m. EDT. During their increment they performed two spacewalks, continued station maintenance and did scientific experiments.

Notable accomplishments included replacing critical hardware in the Joint Quest Airlock; repairing U.S. spacesuits; and submitting a scientific research paper on ultrasound use in space. Chiao was also the first astronaut to vote in the U.S. Presidential election from space. The crew completed two spacewalks, including experiment installation and tasks to prepare the Station for the arrival of the new European Automated Transfer Vehicle next year.

Aboard the Station, Commander Sergei Krikalev and Flight Engineer and NASA Station Science Officer John Phillips, the Expedition 11 crew, are beginning a six-month mission. It will include the resumption of Space Shuttle flights and two spacewalks from the Station. Expedition 11 is scheduled to return to Earth on October 7, 2005. The two latest occupants of the station launched with Vittori from Baikonur April 14.

Krikalev and Phillips will have light duty for the next two days, as they rest after completing a busy handover period. For the past week, they have been learning about Station operations from the two men who called the ship home since October. Chiao and Sharipov briefed Krikalev and Phillips on day-to-day operations and gave them hands-on opportunities at Station maintenance. Chiao and Phillips restored the Quest airlock to working order for future spacewalks and practiced operating the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Ivarr The Boneless Ragnarsson

by

Fred Watson

Ivar known in Old Norse as Ivarr Beinlauss possible meaning, bone-loose or bone-less. (Could it be that he suffered from brittle bone disease or was he simply double jointed or could he have been exceptionally tall and loose limbed). What ever his disability was, if it was indeed a disability, it certainly did not affect his mind. He was already the King of Dublin when he masterminded and led, along with his brothers, Halfdan and Ubbe the great Danish army that arrived in three to four hundred longships to land in East Anglia in 865.

With this great army over wintering in his country King Edmund played it canny and supplied them with horses (maybe he hoped that by doing so, they would move on and he would be rid of them). The ploy seems to work for in the spring of 866 the great army with Ivar at its head rode north. On reaching York he found a civil war in progress, King Osbert and King Aelle were at each other s throats and the city was largely undefended. In November 866 the Danes captured and immediately set about strengthening the city s defences.

In March 867 the rivals Osbert and Aelle ceased hostilities, agreed to join forces and attempted to retake York. The attempt failed, Osbert was killed during the battle, Aelle was captured and died horribly by being subjected by Ivar and his brothers to the death of the Blood Eagle. (Laying him down on this face, they cut his ribs from his spine, ripped them apart and pulled his lungs out through his back). This was done in revenge for the death of their father Ragnarr Lothbrok. Aelle had 20 years previously, cast him into a pit full of vipers and denied him the right to die with a sword in his hand.

What was left of the Royal Court of the Angles fled north to the Capital of Bernicia, Bamborough? The Danes renamed York as Jorvik and after settling the puppet king Ecgberht on the throne, Ivar led the army south again, this time into Mercia and captured Nottingham. They were besieged in the city by a joint army belonging to King Bughred of Mercia and King Aethelred of Wessex. A compromise was reached (Most likely the payment of Danegelt) and Ivar and his army returned to Jorvik.

In 869, Halfdan stayed in Jorvik, while Ivar and Ubbe attacked and overcame the army of King Edmund of East anglia, making the kingdom their own. Edmund escaped, but was captured the following year, after being used by the Danish archers for target practice, was sacrificed to Odin and had his head cut off. Edmund s brother, Edwold fled to Cerne Abbas and became a hermit. The Danes placed Oswald, a puppet king on the throne of East Anglia. The Fens were ravaged and when the people took refuge in Peterborough Abbey the Danes slaughtered them and destroyed the Abbey.

Ivar returned briefly to Jorvik and then set sail for Dublin where he was reunited with Olaf The White, who seems to have been left in charge of Dublin. (Dublin, from Dubh meaning black and Linn, meaning pool, it may have referred to a pool of dark water in a branch of the river Liffey that does not exist today). Olaf had arrived in Dublin in 853 and had already spent many years in southern Pictland taking hostages and collecting tribute. When Ivar and he met up again they launched an attack against the ancient capital of Strathclyde.

Ivar headed northwest from Jorvik, while Olaf sailed up the Clyde at the head of a large fleet and they came together at the capital Dun Breattann, (Fortress of the Britons) Dumbarton Rock. Unable to gain access they besieged the fortress. (Something the Danes did rarely). The stronghold held out for four months until the well on the rock dried up (It is possible that the Danes somehow diverted the water supply). After destroying the fortress the Danes stayed the winter in Strathclyde and returned to Dublin with their booty in the spring. It took 200 ships to carry away the plunder and slaves. (The slaves would have been transported to North Africa and sold to Arab traders).

One of The prisoners was King Artgal of Strathclyde and a ransom demand was sent to his son Rhun. Unfortunately for Artgal, Rhun was ambitious and he approached his wife s brother King Constantine ruler of Alba, who sent gifts to Dublin with the request that Artgal be killed. Ivar accepted and Rhun became king on the death of his father.

Ivar retired to Dublin and hailed as King of the Northmen of all Ireland and Britain and died peacefully in 873. At his own request his body was brought back to England for burial. It is said that William the Conqueror had the body dug up and destroyed.

But was that really the case, in the Book of Hyde written in the 14th century, the Chronicler said that Hingwar (Ivarr?) Drowned 5 years later, while crossing the ford at Hungerford on the way to Edlington.
